Clinical and Molecular Cytogenetics Laboratory

The Clinical and Molecular Cytogenetics Laboratory is a component of South Texas Reference Laboratories of the Department of Pathology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. The laboratory provides support services for faculty and staff of the Health Science Center as well as services to outside hospitals, clinics and physicians. We are a full-service laboratory performing routine and molecular chromosome analysis.


The Clinical and Molecular Cytogenetics Laboratory performs chromosome analysis on the following:


Neoplastic Studies

  • Bone marrow
  • Peripheral blood
  • Lymph node tissue
  • Tumor tissue

Pre-natal Studies

  • Amniotic fluid
  •  Chorionic Villus
  • Percutaneous umbilical blood (PUBS)
  • Products of conception (POC)

Fluorescence In-Situ Hybridization (FISH)

  • On both neoplastic and pre-natal studies

Common Indications for Chromosome Analysis

  • Advanced maternal age
  • Previous offspring with chromosome abnormality
  • Risk of neural tube defect
  • Abnormal serum markers
  • Family history of chromosome abnormality

Tests performed in this laboratory include routine chromosome analysis of samples listed above, high resolution chromosome analysis of peripheral blood, Fragile X DNA studies, and Fluorescence In-Situ Hybridization studies for chromosome abnormalities as well as congenital syndromes.
