The Cornyn Award for Academic Excellence in Pathology

The John Cornyn Award was first awarded in 2010. Dr. John Cornyn served as a Professor of Pathology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio from 1971 until his death in 1989.


He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Texas Dental Branch, Houston, Texas and completed a residency in oral pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, D.C., receiving a Master of Science degree from Georgetown University. Dr. Cornyn served his country in the Air Force for a total of 31 years and retired as a colonel in 1971 when he joined the UTHSCSA Dental School faculty.


Dr. Cornyn was a true genius and visionary who was well ahead of his time. He was one of the Dental School�s founding faculty members and was instrumental in the development of the dental pathology curriculum. He was a brilliant pathologist and a great teacher. Having been in private practice, he brought that clinical knowledge of oral pathology and made important contributions in teaching, research and clinical service. Dr. Cornyn will be remembered for his intelligence, wit, compassion for his patients and love of his country.


The award will be given to a 2nd year dental student with the highest grade in the General Pathology Course, PATH 6019. This outstanding student will receive $500 and a plaque.
